Hello Neighbors!
It’s another grand day in the ol’ West End Neighborhood.
For me this Spring has been particularly bad for volatile temperature swings. I don’t know if it’s actually been any worse than previous years or it’s just my perception, but I know I’m very glad to see a steady stream of warm days on the forecast!! As things heat up that means more people on their front porches, in their yards and – of course – porch parties!! If you’re new to the neighborhood these are great ways to meet your neighbors and have a great time in the process.
Neighborhood Cleanup
Saturday, May 2 is the Neighborhood Cleanup day! The more volunteers we get the faster and easier the task. If you can help out, please meet Mike Rogers at the corner of Wilt and Van Buren that morning at 9am. We typically finish around 11am. He can provide you with gear like gloves, bags and reachers. We already have two trucks committed, but if you can help out with a pickup or trailer to haul things back to the dumpster that would be appreciated as well. Yesterday in West Central: the Swinney Homestead cannon
At our May membership meeting (Monday, 5/18 at 7 pm), former neighbor Dave Dyer will be on hand to provide us a history of the Swinney Park cannon. I’ve had a sneak preview and it’s a very interesting story. Something I’ve seen for decades but never really gave much thought of where it came from. I think you’ll find it fascinating so plan to attend.
After the meeting, Dave and his bud Jerry Nix will stick around to spin yarns about the old days (1950s and 60s) of West Central and growing up here. Everyone is welcome to join them and share / hear stories.
2026 Home & Garden Tour
The 2026 Home & Garden Tour is taking shape! Should be another great one. Save the date for September 12 & 13. We are still looking for additional homes to be on the tour of any shape, size, or condition. If you’re interested please contact Bethany at secretary@westcentralneighborhood.org.
