Born in Kendallville, Indiana in 1895, A.M. Strauss served
as an apprentice in the offices of prominent architects in Chicago and Fort
Wayne, Indiana. He established his
own architectural practice in 1918 in Fort Wayne and became one of Indiana’s
leading architects of the twentieth century.
He worked in a number of popular styles, and many of his works are
major public, commercial, or residential landmarks in cities throughout Indiana
and northwest Ohio. Many of his works
survive in Fort Wayne. Examples include
small bungalows and mansions and public and commercial buildings such as the
St.
Vincent Villa, the Embassy
Theatre and Indiana Hotel, and the Lincoln
Bank Tower. Strauss died in 1958.
